Overview

Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association (SLCMA) is a community based not-for-profit organisation that works with the community to help protect the natural environment within the Sarina Catchment. SLCMA is made up of a variety of stakeholders including individual land holders, industry, local community groups and junior land carers.

Dowdens Pumping and Water Treatment Mackay Branch have designed, built and commissioned a nursery irrigation system for the Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association due to their ongoing water usage issues.

The Problem

Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association had trouble with uneven water application, excessive use of town water, and damage to germinating seedlings via misdirected sprinklers. All of these are manageable issues for the Dowdens Pumping and Water Treatment Mackay Branch.

Our Solution

Dowdens solution was to draw water from two sources. The primary is a Poly Rainwater Tank, and the secondary source is the potable town water supply. We used a GRUNDFOS horizontal multi-stage booster pump with the ability to automatically switch between the tank water and potable water sources.

On top of the GRUNDFOS booster pump, we installed a TORO controller that automatically starts and stops water at programmable times and days and features three independent programs for various seasonal irrigation requirements.

The new irrigation system has allowed Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association to better manage the application of both onsite tank and town water,  increase in the average germination rate of all nursery seedlings and be better equipped to meet the growing needs of current and future community revegetation projects.
